The wonderful Abo Ruin is one of three missions in New Mexico that are known collectively as the Salinas Pueblo Mission Ruins. The main Church and Kiva are shown in this image. After Spain conquered and colonized Mexico Coronado traveled nor th in 1540to find the fabled land of Quivira. This failed but in 1598 Juan de Onate came to New Mexico seeking Salt...Salinas means Salt...The Spanish created a colony to Christianize the Native population extracting work and payment ingoods to the church. Trouble with the Apache Nation, severe drought in the 1600's and conflict between the Church and The Spanish Court brought an end to this culture....The Salinas Pueblo Mission and Ruins is all that remain.
