Description
The Tree Rivers Petroglyphs are located north of Alamogordo, New Mexico. There are over 21,000 petroglyphs at Three Rivers. The Tree Rivers Petroglyphs are outstanding examples of prehistoric Jornada Mogollon rock art. The number and concentration of petroglyphs here makes this one of the largest and most interesting rock art sites in the southwest. The pictures were made with stone tools. These petroglyphs give a glimpse into the minds of the prehistoric people who made them 1000 years ago. While we know how the petroglyphs were made and are fairly certain who made them, we are less certain about why and what they mean. Petroglyphs are quite fragile and can be easily damaged. Once damaged they are gone forever.
