Description
This image was made at night on the Racetrack in Death Valley. I used a one million candlepower light to illuminate the scene. Various sized rocks have somehow travelled across the Playa at the Racetrack in Death Valley, California. The jury of scientists from across the world have not fully explained "how" these rocks move. Some of these rocks are very heavy while some are quite small. This image shows a large rock that I certainly could not lift even if I tried...which I didn't do. Trails left in the Playa suggest that the surface must have been wet at the time they move. Playas are the flattest surface on the face of the Earth. I wanted something different in my image and so I decided to stay out all night at The Racetrack. Using a battery pack and a one million candlepower light I "Light Painted" the rock and the surrounding surface leaving the shutter open for 30 seconds. I am pleased with the result as I have never seen an image like this taken at the Racetrack before. It is always interesting to experiment with images and come up with something that everyone else hasn't already tried.

This is fantastic - most interesting and, as you say, unique in its own right and the story behind it is equally so. My pick of the day for December 3 for the Best of Minimalism in Photography group.

Have been in Death Valley a lot of times, but have not yet seen this rock, though Ive heard about it for year. Our Motorcycle Club Went there every year in February on what we called our "Dirty Socks Ride." Its surprising how cold it can get then, with the cold winds blowing down off the Mountains in Yosemite. We have talked about it, wondering who it moves across the valley. One theory is, that the frequent earthquakes of low magnitudes in the area, cause vibrations which cause it to move. Whatever it is, this is one of the best photos Ive seen of this rock in DECADES.... Its interesting that it was taken at night, with such a powerful light. Like the way this shot hides all the distracting background, focusing attention upon the rock and track across the Valley floor.
